Welcome to the blog! In this space, we
share the daily life of natural

the small setbacks that are part of the

Today we have to talk about a very
special lettuce plant. It emerged
spontaneously, germinating directly in
place with admirable strength. It stood
firm, grew vigorously in the soil, and
endured, but unfortunately, I never got
to taste it: a voracious attack by
snails ended its life prematurely. I am
left with this photo as a reminder of
its presence in the garden and as
testimony to its genetic vigor.
Lettuce is one of the most
noble leafy vegetables for
an organic garden, but it
requires certain conditions
to develop optimally and
remain resilient against
pests:
It prefers loose,
well-drained soil rich in
organic matter or humus.
Well-aerated soil
facilitates the expansion of
its fibrous root
system.
Although it needs good
sunlight to develop,
under extremely high
temperatures it tends to
bolt (flower
prematurely) and turn
bitter. During hot
seasons, partial shade
is highly beneficial.
In
a chemical-free system,
mollusks pose one of the
main challenges. To
protect the crop
naturally, physical
barriers such as wood
ash, crushed eggshells
around the base, dry
mulch, or promoting
natural predators in the
ecosystem can be used.
To
retry growing this
lettuce using natural
agriculture principles
and minimal
intervention, I would
choose two effective
methods:
Surface preparation:
Lightly clear the area
without turning the
soil, pushing the mulch
to the side.
Make a very
shallow furrow
(no deeper than
0.5 cm), as
lettuce seeds
are small and
require indirect
light to
germinate
properly.
Scatter the
seeds thinly and
cover lightly
with a fine
layer of compost
or sifted soil.
Immediately
place a barrier
of wood ash or
crushed
eggshells around
the area to
deter mollusks
from the moment
the seeds
sprout.
Clay mixture:
Combine powdered
clay, fine
compost, and
lettuce seeds
with a bit of
water until
reaching a
workable
consistency.
Roll small spheres (about 1 to 2 cm in diameter), ensuring seeds are enclosed within.
Allow the seed balls to dry in the shade for 24 to 48 hours.
Place the seed ball directly on the soil surface. The clay coating protects the seeds from birds and snails until moisture triggers spontaneous germination.
