Pruning and Transplanting: Step-by-Step

Pruning and Transplanting: Step-by-Step

Winter is the ideal time to work on dormant woody plants and reorganize the garden layout before the spring growth burst. Below is a step-by-step guide to executing the four main tasks for this period, prioritizing soil health and the natural recovery of each species.

  1. Transplanting Streptosolen jamesonii (Marmalade Bush)

  2. This flexible-stemmed shrub requires careful transplanting to keep its root ball intact.

  3. Preparing the Target Hole:
  4. Dig a hole twice as wide and slightly deeper than the current root ball. Mix the excavated soil with mature compost without turning the soil too deeply.

  5. Extraction:
  6. Water the plant the day before to consolidate the substrate. Using a spade, mark a perimeter 30 cm from the main stem and gently pry the plant out intact.

  7. Placement:
  8. Backfill with the soil mixture, press gently around the stem to eliminate air pockets, and give it a generous initial watering.

  1. Transplanting Pentas lanceolata
  2. Pentas are smaller shrubs that require well-drained soil and shelter from cold winds.

  3. Preparing the New Site:
  4. Choose a spot with good sun exposure that is sheltered from freezing winds. Work coarse sand or organic matter into the soil if it is clay-heavy to boost drainage.

  5. Unmolding or Digging Up:
  6. Extract the root ball, keeping the soil mass firmly together around the fine roots.

  7. Planting:
  8. Place the plant in the new hole, backfill with humus-rich substrate, and firm the edges by hand.

    1. Initial Protection:
    2. Water the base and apply a 5 cm layer of dry leaf or wood chip mulch around the plant to retain moisture and soil temperature.
