Good afternoon everyone! How are you doing today?

Today I want to share with you the incredible sight of this burst of blossoms on our natural organic apple tree. It brings us so much joy, especially considering it took over 12 years to bloom with such abundance.
This massive bloom is the direct result of careful, localized pruning carried out over several years. In pome fruit trees like the apple (Malus domestica), understanding tree architecture is essential for balancing vegetative growth and fruit production:



1. Fruit-bearing branches:

We carefully protect branches structured to carry fruit load.




2. Water sprouts ("suckers"):



These are overly vigorous vertical shoots that stretch upward due to shade. They consume massive amounts of nutrients without producing blossoms in the short term.



3. Step-by-Step Pruning Strategy:




Identification & Heading Back: When vertical shoots stretch toward the light, we apply selective heading-back cuts to suppress apical dominance. Sap Redistribution: By trimming back these upright branches, plant nutrients and sap are redirected into lower lateral buds that receive direct sunlight.
Future Spur Induction: Over two to three seasons, these pruned branches lose their excessive vegetative vigor and begin differentiating floral buds (mixed buds), ensuring future blossoms closer to the main framework.






The tree is currently buzzing with bees active in pollination! If the weather remains favorable and the tree stays strong, we hope to set a great crop of apples. Botanically, the strongest fruit set occurs on brachyblasts (short fruit-bearing shoots) and spurs (dardos).
When fruit develops on these compact structures attached to thick, sturdy scaffold branches, it easily withstands adverse weather conditions and wind without dropping prematurely. Time and nature will tell. I captured several photos during the day and at night, along with a video, to show you the different stages of this stunning bloom.
