馃尡 Natural Farming: Ripening and Biological Allies
Today I have some exciting updates from the garden. My organic Butternut squashes (Anco batata) are entering their final ripening stage. As you can see in the photos, the color is amazing, but I’m going to hold off just a bit longer: the stem needs to turn brown, and following tradition, I’ll wait for the first frost to harvest them all.
The most interesting part is happening right on the leaves. Although there’s some powdery mildew, I’ve spotted Psyllobora bicongregata. This tiny antifungal ladybug is working hard, in both larval and adult stages. My plan is straightforward: once harvested, I’ll leave the leaf mulch along with some grass mulch near the mother plants. This way, these natural allies can complete their cycle and keep protecting the garden. In nature, nothing goes to waste!
